Who is EGL?

Our focus is anything but focused. We are not only only excellent students, but excellent teachers, mentors, supporters, explorers and leaders - both inside and outside of the classroom. Because being a leader is about more than personal development, it fosters a sense of community: sharing diverse experiences and skill sets, and helping others to perform at levels that challenge and stimulate them.

At its core, EGL is an academic program. Students in the College of Engineering apply to join in the middle of their undergraduate careers, and go on to complete a Master's degree immediately after graduation. High academic standards are a requirement to be admitted, as well as remain in good standing throughout the program. Students are expected to maintain a strong grade point average (GPA) and an agressive course/class load each semester.. Further academic requirements specific to the degree path chosen may be applicable as well.

One of these academic requirements is for each student in the EGL program to complete a 'Business Core'. This Core consists of multiple classes in the Ross School of Business, as well as a handful of business-oriented leadership modules. In addition to the specific disciplines offered in the College of Engineering, EGL students can enhance their leadership and decision making abilities by applying organizational, economic, and strategic principles. The Business Core provides these competencies. Whether an EGL graduate plans to return to school for an MBA or not, the Business Core has proven to be a wonderful opportunity for students to explore new subject areas and widen their educational perpectives.

One of the most remarkable facets of the EGL program is the complementary nature of the disciplines it brings together. In addition to giving engineering students a business perspective, the EGL program also provides opportunities to study international culture through the Culture Core. Taking classes through the College of Literature, Science & Arts students complete directed study in one of 8 major regions of the world (such as Latin America or Eastern Europe). In addition to this requirement, EGL students must also become proficient in a foriegn language with at least two years of study. However, many EGL students go well beyond this requirement, earning Minor degrees relating to culture or language, studying or working abroad, or simply taking in the diverse cultural opportunities available in our backyard. In fact, EGL has historically supported numerous cultural events in the College of Engineering, including the Winter Traditions Festival (WTF) and MLK events.

The final cornerstone of the EGL program is industry experience. As most graduates find themselves working in industry, gaining exposure to these 'real world' environments becomes an invaluable resource. While many EGL students have summer internships throughout their undergraduate careers, EGL allows them the opportunity to enroll in the Tauber Institute for Global Operations - a program where students complete a year of operations management coursework and leadership training, followed by a 'capstone' summer internship experience where engineering students work with MBA students from the Ross School of Business on a high impact project in industry.
